Peinture corporel Body painting is an art form that can transform a person into a spirit, a work of art, to change sex or even become a sacred place. This form of body art may focus on visual appearance, allegiance, a protective coating and empowerment. The paintings are often worn during initiation rituals, weddings and funerals - all occasions of transition and of spiritual danger. Everywhere, people decorate the "living" with body paint, and also uses some of the paint on the deaths. The paintings are composed of pigments extracted from plants or clay mineral, which can be mixed with vegetable oil or animal fat. Throughout history, the substances used for body paint have been important trade items from around the world.
